These 30 protected corridors ensure the view of the Capitol is unobstructed from different angles around Austin. Established in 1888, these legal protections help preserve the Capitol’s red granite and limestone beauty from nearly every direction.
TODAY’S IMPLICATIONS
As Austin continues to grow, these precious sightlines are more important than ever. In 2007, House Bill 4499 proposed changes that would have eliminated some of these cherished views! With more growth on the horizon, it’s essential that we protect these sightlines, as they’ve been preserved for over 130 years. Let’s keep the Capitol as one of Austin’s most iconic landmarks for generations to come!
